Personal space is the area a person likes to maintain around their bodies.
When I was growing up, my mom used to say that I had a “huge bubble” around me. My sister loved giving hugs, but I hated being touched by anyone. I especially hated my little sister getting in my personal space. Because of this, my mom only made me hug her two times a year — my birthday and Christmas.
My birthday and Christmas had to be two of the most uncomfortable days of the year for me growing up. I did not enjoy when people got in the area around me, or in other words, invaded my personal space. Once this invisible barrier around me was breached, I was very annoyed. The personal space that I liked to maintain varied for different individuals, but most of the time I allowed my friends to get closer to me than my family. I do not require the same personal space as I did when I was a child. I now feel more comfortable with my family being in closer proximity to me than friends or strangers.
